“Last night during my intensive listening practice, the word ‘avocado’ came up.
My boyfriend asked what it meant, and instead of translating, I tried to describe it in English for him to guess.
I said, ‘We often eat it for breakfast mixed with yogurt; it’s shaped like a pear.’
He couldn’t get it—he kept saying ‘kiwi’ because we’ve been eating so many lately!
Later in bed, he suddenly challenged us to an ‘English-only’ rule.
It was hilarious!
We were struggling to say basic things like ‘Don’t pull my hair,’ ‘I’m just tossing and turning,’ or ‘Are you asleep?’
We sounded like toddlers, using broken English and a lot of hand gestures.
That feeling of being tongue-tied was frustrating, but it made me realize that daily immersion—even just a little bit—is a fantastic way to learn!”
